Students of the State University of Malang (UM) again made UM proud in the 2020 Mathematics Competition and Seminar XXVIII (LSM XXVIII) at Yogyakarta State University (UNY), on (07/03). They are Rofiud Darojad and Muhammad Nur Alamsyah, students of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UM. Both of them won 5th place in the National Higher Education Student Mathematics Competition. The XXVIII NGO Competition brings a different impression to this 2017 class student. How could they not, they have to compete with other prestigious universities, such as the University of Indonesia (UI), the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) which are alumni of the Olympic medal winner.
The National Mathematics Education (NGO) Competition and Seminar is an annual activity held routinely by the Mathematics Education Department Student Association (HIMATIKA) FMIPA Yogyakarta State University. As the name implies, NGOs are a series of activities consisting of a Mathematics Competition, a National Mathematics Seminar and Mathematics Education. Mathematics competitions are held for junior high school students, high school students, and students throughout Indonesia. The National Mathematics Seminar is held for students, students, teachers, lecturers, and all mathematics practitioners. This activity also provides opportunities for practitioners to channel their talents as speakers in the seminar. This year with the theme "Optimizing the Future with Mathematics", the NGO event is in its 28th year of implementation and will be held in February 2020.
In his interview with the UM Communication Magazine crew, Rofiud explained the process for his team to be ranked fifth nationally, "To prepare for the XXVIII NGO, my colleagues and I often study together even though it is on holidays or afternoons after class which is shaded by the Mathematics Community. From the preliminary to the final, we were given several student math olympiad questions with only 1 hour of time and here we are required to have good cooperation between team members and write good, precise, and effective solutions. When the elimination was completed and announced, there were 2 UM teams that qualified for the semifinals at UNY. When the final was taken in the top 5 and Alhamdulillah my team passed in 3rd place. However, when in the final my team dropped to 5th place to become 5th place, "said Rofiud when explaining his struggle with the team until he won 5th place. Rofiud also has hopes for students. UM must be enthusiastic about bringing UM's name to big. “The point is, don't bring your alma mater name into your name, but bring your name into your alma mater name. Therefore, there is no such thing as leyeh-leyeh relaxed, there must be more sacrifice of time and energy. I believe that UM students can really compete with big universities like UI, UGM, and IPB. The most important thing is intention, effort, prayer, and tawakal, "he said. Waviq.
